초등생 공기총 살인사건
An incident that revealed how terribly humans can become monsters occurred in Gwangju, Jeolla Province, South Korea in 2009. A man in his late 40s, surnamed Lee, struck an 11-year-old elementary school boy with his car. The young student was crossing the street after finishing his taekwondo training when he was tragically hit by Lee's vehicle. At the time, Lee was driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level far exceeding the legal limit for license revocation.
Although it was a traffic accident, the boy had not suffered serious injuries. He had a minor head wound that was bleeding slightly and was able to walk on his own. Startled by the accident, the boy ran off crying. At that moment, Lee caught up with him, put him in his car, and took him to a nearby hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, the boy needed an examination before treatment. However, because it was nighttime, the hospital stated they couldn't perform an MRI scan. An MRI was necessary to accurately determine where the child was injured, so it was an appropriate measure for the traffic accident victim to undergo an MRI scan. Hearing this, Lee took the child outside the hospital. This scene was captured on CCTV, which became crucial evidence for the prosecutors who indicted Lee.
Lee then took the child somewhere in his car, neither taking the child to another hospital nor to the child's home. This place was Damyang, located about 15km to 20km away from Gwangju. There, Lee committed a horrific murder that no human being should ever commit. Lee intentionally killed the child by firing approximately 6 to 7 shots from an air rifle he had on him, then abandoned the body. It is said that Lee didn't even have a driver's license at the time. After being arrested by prosecutors and indicted for murder, Lee was sentenced to life imprisonment at trial and is currently serving his sentence. This case is known as the elementary school air rifle murder case. Despite the passage of considerable time since its occurrence, it is still frequently covered in the media and elsewhere.

비록 교통사고 였지만, 그 소년은 심한 부상을 당하지 않고, 머리에 약간의 상처를 입어 피를 흘리고 있었으며, 혼자 걸을 수 있었다. 교통사고로 인해 놀란 소년은 울면서 뛰어갔는데, 이때 이씨는 그 아이를 붙잡고 자신의 차에 태워 근처 병원으로 데리고갔다. 병원에 도착한 후에, 치료에 앞서 검사를 받아야 했는데, 당시가 밤이었기 때문에, 병원에서는 MRI촬영을 할 수 없다고 했다. MRI촬영을 해야, 아이가 어디를 다쳤는지 정확하게 알 수가 있기 때문에, 교통사고 피해자는 MRI촬영을 받는게 적절한 조치였다. 이 말을 들은 이씨는 아이를 데리고 병원 밖으로 나왔는데, 이 장면이 cctv에 담겼고, 이것은 이씨를 기소한 검찰에게는 중요한 증거가 되었다.
이씨는 이후 아이를 다른 병원으로 데려가거나, 아이의 집으로 데려가지 않고, 아이를 자신의 차에 태워서 어딘가로 이동했다. 이곳은 담양이란 곳인데, 광주에서 약 15km ~ 20km 떨어진 곳이었다. 이곳에서 이씨는 차마 인간으로서 저지를 수 없는 끔찍한 살인을 저지르게 된다. 이씨는 아이에게 가지고 있던 공기총을 6~7발 정도를 발사해서 아이를 의도적으로 살해하고 시체를 유기한 것이었다. 이씨는 당시 심지어 운전면허도 없는 상태였다고 한다. 이후 검찰에 구속되고 살인죄로 기소된 이씨는, 재판에서 무기징역을 판결받았고 현재 복역 중이다.
이 사건은 초등생 공기총 살인사건으로 불리며, 사건 발생이후 많은 시간이 지났음에도, 종종 언론 등에서 다뤄지곤 하는 사건이다.
